Patient Advice Post Ear Irrigation
The ear canal maybe vulnerable to an ear infection after the irrigation. This is because all the wax is removed. The wax has inherent properties which protect the ear canal.
Until the ear produces more wax to protect the ear canal, keep the ears dry from water for 1-2 days.
To keep the ears dry when you are washing you hair, showering, bathing or swimming, insert ear plugs or cotton wool coated in petroleum jelly into the outside of the ear canal as this will act as a protective seal.
In the unlikely event that you develop pain, dizziness, reduction in hearing or discharge from the ear after the procedure, please contact your GP.
It may be helpful to instil olive oil drops (for ears) 1-2 times a week and wear ear plugs when in water for people that have a recurrent build-up of wax.
Ear irrigation does not cause the build-up of wax.
If wax was removed due to hearing loss and you are still having problems hearing, consult your GP as they may refer you for a hearing assessment.
Remember, ear wax protects the ear. Poking will only compact the wax deeper into the ear canal and cause further problems. The ear is self-cleaning and does not need poking with flannels, or the shower head direction into the ear or cotton buds.
